Pregnancy Pain

Pregnancy can be a wonderful time in a woman's life, however it can also add another complex dimension that needs to be considered.  During pregnancy the body undergoes a phenomenal number of changes to your posture, affecting the hips, pelvis, knees and ankles especially.  The uterus increase in size dramatically, causing a rapid readjustment of these joints to accommodate.  Not only do the joints have to alter their positions but muscles and internal organs are also effected in a very short space of time.

Sometimes the sciatic nerve, which passes through this area and into the lower leg, can be affected, especially during the last trimester when your center of gravity changes to be more forward as your bump grows.  This creates a greater lower back curve and increased usage of alternative muscles in the buttock and lower back to compensate.

In addition some pregnant mothers can experience some pelvic girdle pain / symphysis pubis dysfunction or upper back pain as the body tries to readjust to the altered position of the spinal curves.  As an osteopath it is my job to explain what is happening and identify the best ways to relieve any pain you may be experiencing.  I will also discuss any stretches or exercises that may be helpful and will be completely safe to perform during the final stages of pregnancy.

OUR APPROACH

A full clinical and orthopaedic examination helps identify not only the cause of any pain but also anything that may be contributing to it. Once the cause is established we will explain it to you in a way you can understand. We will also let you know how we can help and whether we need to make any referrals.

Often, depending on the cause, treatment can start immediately to help relieve your pain and usually includes a combination of soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching, manipulation and acupuncture. However please be assured that you are able to choose if you would prefer not to have any particular treatment.

You will also be provided a wealth of advice including exercises and lifestyle advice. In addition, we can also do an ergonomic assessment to ensure your working environment does not contribute to your pain.
