Elbow Pain
Our elbows are very prone to suffering from repetitive strain injuries (RSI), especially for those that spend a lot of time typing, but can also be manual workers or those performing sports. An RSI is the general term used to describe pain felt in the muscles and tendons, which is caused by a repetitive movement.
The most commonly known RSIs in the elbow are “tennis elbow” and “golfer’s elbow” however these injuries are certainly not confined to people performing these sports. In both cases the muscles in the forearm becomes chronically short and tight, which then constantly pulls on the bone causing pain and inflammation. The pain felt can be anything from very mild to severely debilitating, often getting worse overnight. Some people feel this as an aching, throbbing, tender area that can be tingling or cramping.
Initially you may only notice the pain when you are performing a certain task, however without treatment the pain may develop and become constant. You may also notice some swelling in the area, which can last a significant length of time.
OUR APPROACH
A full clinical and orthopaedic examination helps identify not only the cause of your elbow pain but also anything that may be contributing to it. Once the cause is established we will explain it to you in a way you can understand. We will also let you know how we can help and whether we need to make any referrals.
Often, depending on the cause, treatment can start immediately to help relieve your pain and usually includes a combination of soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation, stretching, manipulation and acupuncture. However please be assured that you are able to choose if you would prefer not to have any particular treatment.
You will also be provided a wealth of advice including exercises and lifestyle advice. In addition, we can also do an ergonomic assessment to ensure your working environment does not contribute to your pain.
